Fine Art — Painting, Mixed Media & Conceptual Practice

Fine Art — Painting, Mixed Media & Conceptual Practice

The medium is not the work. The work is the idea made physical — and the idea doesn't care what material it passes through.

That's the principle my fine art practice runs on. I began working in Sumi ink on rice paper, drawn to the discipline it demands: the brush doesn't forgive hesitation, and the ink doesn't wait for certainty. The work that came from that practice was described, by more than one person, as resembling William S. Burroughs — not the content, but the relationship to language, to the mark, to the collision between intention and accident. I took that as a direction rather than a comparison.

From there, the practice has expanded into acrylic, mixed media, and whatever form the current investigation requires. I am not attached to a material signature. I am attached to the question.

My influences in this work are Yves Klein — for the way he made absence into presence, and turned a colour into a philosophy — Paul Reps, Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac. The through-line is not visual style but a relationship to making: fast, direct, committed, uninterested in the appearance of effort.
